Making a Difference
The holidays are filled with presents, parties, and time with our families, but there are many who will have a very different experience this season. Fish & Loaves recognizes the needs of people around the world, giving us the opportunity to act as the hands and feet of Jesus through generosity. This alternative gift market reflects the early church’s teaching to “not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (Hebrews 13:16).
Fish & Loaves is a way for people to honor their loved ones while supporting local and global mission partners through the holiday season. Last year, HP Pres members sent over 7,000 gift cards which raised over $69,000 to those in need. Elizabeth, a Fish & Loaves volunteer, shares “As Christians, it’s our responsibility to share the resources we’ve been given with those who need them.”
The Christmas season reminds us of the ultimate gift of salvation. Through God’s perfect plan to send his only son as the savior of the world, we can have new life. Jesus’ birth offers us hope but his life provides us with a blueprint for how to live. During his earthly ministry, Jesus fed the hungry and healed the sick, showing us the importance of meeting the physical needs of those around us. Elizabeth shares, “Christmas is a huge time of need for many. Volunteering has helped me to realize the importance of caring for others.”
While the holiday season brings specific attention to both the joy and the pain in the world, we can be a part of sharing God’s love with those around us at any time of year. Serving at the Fish & Loaves booth on Sunday mornings, Elizabeth shares, “A big part of learning about these partners is recognizing that there’s a need year-round.” Even the smallest action of generosity can have a big impact.
