Breaking Down Barriers

There’s something powerful about feeling truly welcomed — it opens the door to real, meaningful conversations about faith. When Biblical teaching is offered in someone’s native language, we are creating the kind of welcoming environment that can reach neighbors in our city who might otherwise never hear about the love of Christ.

This year, we began a new Sunday class for people who speak Spanish to hear teaching from God’s Word in the language most familiar to them. Calvin, a leader and member of the class, says, “I want my Spanish brothers and sisters to know that Christ has been the only way since the beginning of time.”

Welcoming people in to ask questions and learn about God’s word can have a huge impact, rippling out into the world and touching countless other lives. Years ago, Calvin came to know Jesus because of a coworker who he describes as a spiritual father. He shares, “I used to be an unbeliever of the Word, but God put us together for a reason. I had all the time in the world to ask him questions about God, and he always had answers for me.”

For the past 100 years, HP Pres has been committed to sharing the Gospel with the people in our city and beyond through conversations just like the ones Calvin had with his spiritual father. From that mission, church plants, including the Mandarin Chinese Church and All Nations congregations, have grown from small sparks into flourishing communities. Calvin shares that his prayer for the Spanish Sunday Class is that, like these other congregations and his own faith, it will “grow and for it to be the small beginning of something big.”

The Spanish Sunday Class is a great opportunity to share the Gospel with the many people in our city who speak Spanish. Whether it is their first language or the only language they speak, there is a place for them here to learn and grow in their faith in Christ. Calvin shares that his heart for the people who come to the class is that they will understand what Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
