Your Experience Matters

Published On August 24, 2025

Dr. Paul Sanders can be found on Sunday mornings, chatting with people about medicine and science as he serves as the doctor on call three Sundays a month. Since moving to the surrounding neighborhood in the late 1970s, Dr. Sanders and his family have loved being a part of HP Pres. His years of medical practice equipped him with knowledge and experience that he now uses to play an integral role on the Sunday morning volunteer team. He shares, “My time at the church has taken the place of my practice after retiring. I enjoy answering people’s medical questions and being helpful.”

People are put at ease by Dr. Sanders’ presence on Sunday mornings in case of an emergency, but he has found that talking to people about medical topics has been the primary focus of his ministry as a volunteer. He shares, “Although I do not diagnose or treat people, I can help them learn how to approach problems. I feel like I’m doing something useful when I’m able to answer people’s questions.”

A person does not have to enter into vocational ministry to make an impact for the Kingdom of God. We learn in Romans 12:4-5, “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Your experience matters to the Kingdom of God because you have a unique perspective and skillset to offer other people. Dr. Sanders puts his experience in preventative medicine to use by answering people’s questions about their health or the health of their family members, sharing “Interacting with people keeps me going. I feel motivated and encouraged to keep serving because I enjoy helping people.”

God has created each of us with a purpose in mind, gifting us with unique passions and perspectives. It takes about 115 volunteers each Sunday to greet, teach, pray, sing, and serve and there is a place for your specific skillset to be of value.
