Hanging on Every Word

Published On April 23, 2024

A few weeks after VBS ended last year, a family approached Sami with big smiles on their faces. Their daughters remembered her hosting from the stage, clad in her neon jacket, and leading the kids in their memory verse every day. Sami shares that “it was amazing to see the kids quoting the scripture we had rehearsed with them on stage or seeing them recall parts of the lesson that was taught. Kids are sponges; every word we say matters so much!”

For Sami, VBS was formative in her faith as a child and was the first place she opened a Bible. Her own experience motivated her to volunteer as an adult to be a part of something that could change a child’s life. On stage, she had the unique experience of seeing all their faces as the kids connected with Jesus, some of them for the first time. She recalls that “the kids began to realize that Jesus is our friend and that our God is approachable and wants to hear from His children!”

Sharing her time and experience taught her how “serving with kids opens our eyes to the simplicity and beauty of the gospel.” God loves us every moment of our lives, whether we are five years old or one hundred and five.

VBS is a week that our kids look forward to every summer and is a place for people of all ages to share God’s love. In Sami’s words, “it takes a village to put on VBS, so please do not discredit yourself. There is a place for everyone!”
