The Night Everything Changed

Published On December 9, 2024

Robert had a full life as a student at SMU. He had a passion for his degree in music and was surrounded by friends and family that loved him. Despite all this, something clouded his soul, keeping him from the joy, peace, and happiness he knew was possible.

Since a young age, Robert questioned what happens to people when they die. He felt afraid of death and began to examine the facts of the Christian faith. “Everything I had was head knowledge and not anything that permeated my heart. I knew it to be true intellectually, but I never thought it would have any effect on my life.” He began to search for answers to his questions about faith and life after death.

“When I looked at all the evidence, I came to the conclusion that God must exist and that he is expressed most clearly in the person of Christ,” he reflected. This revelation prompted him to read the Bible regularly, renewing his faith in small ways. Yet fears, doubts, and questions about the purpose of life lingered. At one point, he asked himself, “If I had everything I ever wanted and hell was still waiting for me, would any of it matter?”

He continued to wrestle with the idea of a life filled with meaning, until he had a conversation with one of his teachers. She had heard about his search for purpose and asked him if he ever considered Christ as an option. Robert knew this conversation was an answer to his prayers and committed to pursuing God in a way he never had before.

Later in his dorm, he prayed that God would show him the way and save him from his sinfulness. That was the night everything changed.

“All of a sudden, I felt the weight of sin and guilt drop from me. I stood up and immediately felt this joy, peace, and happiness like I had never felt ever before. I felt so free and so at peace with everything. I could barely keep myself from running down the streets.”

Since that day, Robert has been completely transformed. He started attending HP Pres at the invitation of a friend and joined our church as a Covenant Partner earlier this year. Robert’s story reminds us that God’s never-ending love is for all of us. We just need to be willing to accept it.
